1st Semester Wraps Up

So this week marks the closure of my first semester in grad school. I SURVIVED. Its been a quick, and sometimes hectic journey. I lost a few classmates along the way, 3 to be exact. In our program there were only 16 to begin with and now we’re down to 13. People fell off for various reasons. Grad school is very much a jealous lover. Most of us have jobs during the day and a many also have families at home. So in addition to being on top of your school work, you have to be on point at work, yet supportive and available for your family. I certainly don’t know how those with families do it.

I’ve picked up a few bad habits, drinking skinny mochas w/ extra shots, drinking Mountain Dew (caffeine), and of course my sugar free energy drinks. At this point, I need any and everything to keep my energy level up. My typical days are at least 12 to 13 hours long. I leave home in the morning around 8:30 am and usually get home around 9:30pm close to 10. So what kind of mother or wife could I really be after a long ass day? Again, hats off to those who do this.

My last class (Starting a Business I & II) was yesterday evening and after our oral presentations, our professor treated us to round of drinks at a local bar. It was rather bitter sweet. My class consisted of graduating PMBAs (professional mba-students who have jobs) and our group (first semester entrepreneur students) roughly 60 students total. This was one of my most rewarding classes to date. I now know how to properly assess potential business opportunities, meaning figuring out if there’s a viable market and other financial related research methods. I now know how to write a thorough business plan (I see why some firms charge several thousands of dollars). I now know how to do an elevator and venture capitalist sales pitch. So guess I am slowing getting my $47k worth of education….
