We Like to Have Fun: But She Is My Boss...

So I’ve been hanging out after hours with my boss (a female by the way) at least three times. Our first outing was actually lunch. What makes this particular lunch hour unique is the fact that we had some drinks along with our food. Usually when I go out for lunch during company time, I’ve had thoughts about getting an alcoholic drink but never did. We’ll she and I had great conversation, a great drink, and good food. We returned back to work feeling less pressure and ended things on a very productive note.

This entire experience is an experiment. I’ve never hung out with my boss and defiantly never went out and got drunk together. I honestly can’t gauge if this is a good idea or a bad idea. Truth is my instincts aren’t screaming “CAUTION”. Anyway, our seconding outing was last Monday after work we went to happy hour had a few drinks and then decided to hit the mall and did some light shopping. The night was still fairly young so we went to another bar and had more drinks. I have to admit, she’s a fun lady to hang out with. She’ about 10 years older and she’s also from Cali, so naturally we would get along.

Nothing has really changed in terms of work; I think we’re professional enough to keep our business during the day separate from our fun after hours. Again, I am not sure if this is a good idea or a bad one? Last Friday (our third outing), I called her up after work to hang out and have some fun since it wasn’t a “school night”. She was down and suggested a cool spot to hang out at. I got completely fucked up, but I had so much fun. I woke the next day with a hang over and felt like shit most of the day. I like hanging out with her, I wouldn’t say all of the time but we’ll definitely do it again…

Yes, I had a supervisor like that who wanted to recapture her youth, and she was 12 years older than me. She was always about the after work cocktails. Soon, I just realized that she was a raging alcoholic, who was not highly regarded in the company because of her openly lush life tendencies. She was so horrible that she often did not show up for work for weeks at a time. This is not to say that this is your situation, but her once chummy demeanor turned the minute her sinking ship hit the fan, and she attempted to take me down. Alcohol and supervisors don't always mix...eyes wide open just in case.

I hang out with my coworkers, including my boss, all the time. We only invite people who know how to be professional during business hours and can keep their mouths shut about what happens during our outings. In a situation like yours, it's important to be a good judge of character. Before she is your boss, she's a person. Evaluate her as such first and foremost and then the decision about whether or not you should keep hanging out with her afterhours will be an easier one to make.

that's cool that you and your boss have that type of relationship

where I work has sort of a weird vibe... they have even brought champagne around in the office when we made a certain quota or something... and we do company happy hours on the regular...

i dont think I would go to a night club with my boss... but hanging out at a bar afterwork is a regular thing for my office.

i think it all depends on the vibe adn the ability to know that it what happens outsides the offices STAYS outside the office what happends IN the office is IN the office...folks around here don't know how to draw that line, its always work work work...and always diggin to see what they can find out...therefore i don't do it but if I were in a situation where it was a line it would be different

"Caution" came to mind long before you admitted that the caution-light turned on in your head.

If I remember correctly, you're fairly new at the job. Sometimes a boss wants to "feel you out." And sometimes a more sinister motive (such as building a case against you) can lurk beneath.

If none of those Conspiracy Theories (lol) are true, there's still the issue that you may leave yourself open to a scrutiny that may or may not spill into the office. And in those cases, the person in authority usually wins.

(Not to mention if her behavior comes into question by higher-ups, you'll be guilty by association).

But hey. Life is a series of lessons. You may have found the perfect lunch/happy hour/after work friend. Just watch for signs of trouble.

I say CAUTION. She may slip up around you and do something so embarssing that she will feel uncomfortable around you afterwards.
