To Be Racist or Not To Be Racist: While in Public…

So everyone in America regardless if you’re active on current events or not are fully aware of the Imus issue (and yes it’s truly his issue).

But I wonder now what is Mr. Don truly sorry for now? Is it because you insulted an entire group of people? Is it because you were caught making your racist comments while on air? Is it the fact that your show has now been cancelled? Is the fact that you thought you could say whatever you freaking please on air and not have to answer to anyone?

I’ve spoken to few people about this topic (of course it’s one of those touchy subjects people want to shy away from) who are white. It’s funny how many would say this is an example of yet another “double standard”. I find it interesting to see what scenario people attempt to apply this incident to. The subject of black rappers and entertainers using the word nigga or hoes seems to not leave the same taste in the black community mouths.

I feel that argument is 100 percent irrelevant due to the fact that the songs or jokes aren’t speaking to a specific individual and it is usually used in a manner that is in the form of entertaining (again not condoning this behavior). But to have an old ass white man get on public radio and address some black female college students as “nappy headed hoes” isn’t entertaining and no where near funny.

Some feel this wouldn’t be as much of a deal if he would have used the same terms at some welfare “poor” black females. I would also disagree, the social background or educational level has no difference in my eyes. It will never be cool for anyone to get on the radio and call anyone “nappy headed hoes”. Yes, things are in fact different because he chose to voice his lame ass opinion on some black women who attend a reputable college.

I am sick and tired of white people thinking they can use a public form to insult an entire race of people because they find it amusing. It’s not about free fucking speech. It’s about using a powerful tool to voice your racist opinions and thoughts in a respectable manner. I assume he thought because he has the “shock factor” he can say whatever the hell he pleases. “Shock factor” is openly discussing outrageous sexual, political, or spiritual beliefs in the form of entertainment. You do not have the right to publicly degrade or insult a culture of people you know shit about.

I was reading another blog site discussing this same topic and decided to cut & paste a few responses

This is so completely wrong! Imus is an idiot and his comment was reprehensible. To fire him is wrong. Black rappers can sit around and degrade anyone they wish and face no consequences, but when a white man says the same terminology its off with his head. Double standard all the way. When is the mainstream media going to discuss this? When are these camera hungry black activists going to go after all these uneducated, misogynistic rappers? Mlk is turning in his grave that they care nothing about helping the black community and more about getting their camera time. Tawana Brawley? The duke lacrosse players? Pick and choose

please - enough with the slave comments and how "whites brought you here" and "our ancestors in the cotton fields" etc etc. this is COMPLETELY IRRELEVANT! grow up please!!!! stop living in history! no white person you encounter today had anything to do w/ your ancestor's life so please give it up already.
anyways...america is becoming so sad. forget having an opinion or making a joke. unless of course you want to apologize 100 times over.

WHAT A BUNCH OF HYPOCRITES! AL SHARPTON IS A RACE BAITING PIECE OF SHIT THAT DOES ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO STOP ALL THE ILLS IN THE BLACK COMMUNITY BUT SPENDS ALL HIS TIME AND EFFORT GRANDSTANDING ABOUT A RADIO HOSTS STUPID IRRESPONSIBLE COMMENTS! WHAT IMUS SAID WAS 100% WRONG BE HE DOESN'T DESERVE TO BE FIRED. I'LL BET MY LIFE ON THE FACT THAT ALMOST EVERYONE ON THE RUTGERS GIRL'S BASKETBALL TEAM LISTENS TO RAP SONGS WITH NOTHING BUT RACIST LYRICS. WHAT A BUNCH OF BULLSHIT.
HOW ABOUT APOLOGIZING TO EVERY WHITE PERSON YOU RUINED WITH THE TAWANA BRAWLEY HOAX??? YOU FAT BLACK NAPPY HO AL SHARPTON!!!!

Thank God the Hispanic population in this country is growing; at least they work! Unlike the growing bunch of Montel-watching, cheeze-wiz-eating, welfare losers. Laziness is killing this country. All this is making the good old USA a massive breeding ground for a bunch of overtly racially sensitive lazy-ass fatties with no brains and a mob mentality.

Holy shit people are stupid. Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton should spend more time teaching poor ignorant black people some life skills and less time harping on Don Imus joke gone wrong. That show was great - I have watched it on tv for the last few years and I will really miss it.
I hope he gets new sponsorship immediately! I'd take him!

Young people of COLOR, what about young people of the WHITE color..what does it say about them? You are just a white girl, you can be called all sorts of names not only by TV stations like BET(fuckers), but also by rap lyrics. What happened to the white people justice?
Al Sharpton will never apologize to a white person. It's plain and simple. This country has a double standard and it is what it is. Watch the freakin game he commented on, they all had corn rowsand all tatted up. So he made an observation. Was he wrong. The black card (as usual) is being played but I am shocked womens groups aren't complaining about the ho portion.
i agree with ELLE. this whole think is ridiculous. i hate how everyone has to walk on eggshells making sure they don't offend everyone. stop making everything into a race issue. get over yourselves. people are allowed to say what they want. now those rutger's girls are going to play the victims for as long as it's in the news. this is so stupid. i'm sort of glad he said what he did.

This is why we will always have such comments and opinions made about Black people. I say actions always speak louder than words!!!!!

Hi - Been reading a couple days now and decided to post.

I have no idea who this guy is, but it seems in the last couple months people have seemed to think it's fine to say racial comments in a public forum and then apologize thinking that will make things A-Ok. I'm starting to wonder if these "famous" people really honestly think this will help their careers...

I'm glad the guy was fired. I read a couple articles on this subject and this wasn't even his first time, he's had complaints before for similar comments. He got what he deserved and an apology after the fact won't mean sh!t.

Hey,
I was discussing this incident with a co-worker of mine today. It just seems to me like "people" are trying to bring back the bad ol' days, when african americans and other races were openly called derogitive names on the air, in the streets and in the workplace etc etc. Almost like these celebrities were contracted to be racist in front of millions. What better publicity for the promotion of racism then let the masses see a celebrity acting a plum fool?

Also, I just came across your blog last week. I've enjoyed it so far.

I'm not shocked that he said it, but was not completely offended. I called him an ass for using his position to air his thoughts and not consider that he could lose his all as a result of it.

Quite frankly, he's probably only repeating what many in the black community have thought, are thinking, and are saying. Hell, just listen to folk talk and half of them are saying the very same thing to and about each other. Song lyrics are constantly making disparaging comments. Saying it within the community does NOT make it right. It's as wrong as a white person saying it. We promote and train others in how to treat us by speaking in this fashion. I'm sorry, I'm nobody's "nigga, bitch, or hoe" and I don't give a damn who says it to me.

Celebrities aren't exempt from making racial comments black or white; they're human too and have their opinions. While I don't think what he did was right, I still dont think it gives blacks the right to get up in arms when they're the first to demean their own race and women.

What I Have To Say
